So I'm about to indulge on a trip to Peru ayahuasca-ville. Hopefully the indigenous people don't eat me up there . I'm really stoked for the opportunity, for how many people can really say they get to meet all of their fears and all of their best moments at the same time. I figure the journey will be worth speaking about, so I'm hoping to post once I return. Those that know me well know this is just another step on my little experience we call life...looking forward to the continual exploration and realization as I/we break out of this chrysalis we are so set on thinking of as reality...

You know, some people are of the opinion that ayahuasca tourism is really hurting the Amazonian tribes that use it. I personally don't have an opinion, in an absence of sufficient knowledge, but it is easy enough to make ayahuasca or an analog at home.

wouldn't surprise me that there are people who would say this; there is an anti-thesis to every thesis. the good thing is that the the guy who is having us is under the tutelage of an 87 year old amazonian shaman, and all of our "costs" are going to the village that they support. Also, to minimize negative impact to the amazon jungle, they are buying portions of the jungle around them, so that their tribe will always own it and can manage it (with minimal impact). As far as resources, if you are going on one of these trips for spiritual reasons (god knows why anyone would want to try this for fun ?!) then you will be with a true shaman. As in, a shaman from one of the tribes down there. This means they know how to harvest the vine without negatively impacting the plant as a resource.
However, I totally agree that the "corporate" ayahuasca sessions being pulled together by wannabe "shamans" is ridiculous. These people/programs are very easy to spot, and they do nothing for the amazon jungle or it's people.
Your comment, on the other hand, can do more damage to the amazonian tribes. Specifically, people doing it at home are usually ordering it through a corporate entity of some sort. This usually means both over harvesting as well as improper harvesting, a lethal combo for the vine and those that use it for spiritual/religous reasons.
Lastly, just to clarify for those that take interst in this, do NOT try to make this stuff at home unless you seriously know what you are doing. MAO Inhabition can seriously kill you; also, the trip is so strong it is highly recommended that you do it with someone very experienced in it. DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!
My trip there is for spiritual reasons, so keep that in context

Hey have fun enjoy the experience a world away from what your used to. It's a challenge If you can fit it - take a small tape recorder/tapes/acoustic and record some songs in the middle of the forest with nature as your backdrop [a kind of floyd - ummagumma on local type thing] [ hmmm but where you gonna find a pict ] Don't worry about the thesis' you have a right to explore this planet and I commend you for doing so . Take care dude.

Sounds like you're conscientious about it, so that's good enough for me.
I've had dreams about experiencing ayahuasca in a traditional setting, but in the end I figured it's more important (to me) to experience it in the context of my own culture, rather than try to identify with a different culture. That's my own opinion on it, I'm not getting down on yours.

awesome idea Engine! I'll bring a handheld (assuming I remember to bring it in my anticipation ).
totally understand where you are coming from Veracohr. i'd like to try it on my own, in my own setting (or at least landscape/region), but figured for my first time i'd try it with those who founded it and then apply those experiences here if need be. for me, it's definitely been something that has been a "when the time is right thing." as in, it feels like my life has been building toward this since i've been born and first learned that our existince here is temporary.
i hear you on your dreams. on the ayahuasca forums, they would say that "the vine is calling you." let me know if you try it (or, if you want to wait i'll relate my experiences )
my leave date is august 4th. btw, have you ever tried salvia? you might like it if you are having dreams about ayahuasca...

Yes I've used salvia. Not much, barely started learning from her. I don't use psychedelics regularly. I wait for the right time. The time apparently hasn't been right for ayahuasca in the 6 or 7 years I've been interested in it. But that's okay, I'm not ready for it.

Just curious...what did you think of your salvia experience? There is a Salvia "essence" available I am prepared to try soon. The last time I used Salvia was 2 years ago, and that was purely to answer some fundemental questions I had been pondering. The experience was intense to say the least; I never was an amnesiac during the experience, but it was most profound.
I hear you on the timing issue. I had to wait most of my life for this opportunity, patiently abiding her call. I think it's wonderful to see another "truth" seeker that isn't into these things for the "illusion" (i.e. sensory enjoyment only)

About two years ago for me too, for salvia. I only have a couple times under my belt, and so far it's just getting to know the experience. Plain leaf, no extracts, so my experiences have been mellow.

i've tried the 10x extract, and it's like a locomotive. different from the standard leaf, since you don't have to take in the large amount of smoke.
how were your experiences? diconnected from your "self" at all?

No, not that strong. It was a feeling that was at once the strangest thing I'd ever felt, and also like a very familiar feeling, the memory of a way I used to feel as a kid.

yeah...like everything is new and familiar at the same time. I've had some amazing seperation from my "i" that was really nice via some smoked 10x. Amazingly powerful stuff...I can see how some people might find it frightening.
